Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
